Benifallet City Council approves the purchase of the SAT building

The mayoress of Benifallet, Mercè Pedret, and the Board of Directors of the SAT Benifallet Fruits have already signed the agreement to buy the warehouse of the cooperative located on Avinguda Lluís Companys, within the village. Both parties have signed the historic agreement for the municipality because, on the one hand, it allows to solve the economic difficulties that the SAT is facing, which motivated the current directive to deal with it, and because it is achieved that this equipment, built with the effort of many people, is owned by the people. In this sense, it is necessary to emphasize the effort of both parts so that the warehouse remains for the benefit of all the municipality, allowing to have a central and strategic space for recreational and sport use.

The signing came after the City Council had approved in the extraordinary plenary of last September 15, with the favorable votes of the municipal group of the Candidacy of Progress and the abstention of ERC, the purchase of the warehouse owned by the Agrarian Transformation Society. The City Council has already advanced a part of the purchase amount, 50,000 euros and during the next financial year the rest of the payment and the final acquisition will be made. The City Council has also informed the Generalitat of the operation, contemplated in the adjustment plan for the period 2017-2027, to give its consent. The property has 1,756 m2 and is located on Avinguda Lluís Companys, in the very center of the town by the river. The purchase amounts to a total of 195,000 euros. It should be noted that the SAT maintains the building of the former Cooperativa el Progrés, which merged with the SAT in 2009.

The mayoress of Benifallet, Mercè Pedret, emphasized that the restraint and care in the expenditure made in the last two years, to deal with the high debt that occured in previous mandates, guarantee that this can be carried out operation and comply with the adjustment plan that would definitively clean up municipal finances. "Since 2015, when we came to government, we have reduced the debt by about 300,000 euros and last year we managed to close it with a positve 50,000 euros in treasury."

Pedret stressed that "it is a very thoughtful decision because the economic situation of the City Council is not good, but it has been an opportunity that has presented itself just now and we could not pass it up. It had to be done out of responsibility and also it was a moral obligation. "He also pointed out that this equipment will provide leisure and sports services and trade fairs in the municipality and address current shortcoming. "We must think that currently the City Council does not have any covered place to hold the Holidays or to celebrate Firebre or any sports facility with guarantees for boys and girls and for adults," he said. Finally, he noted the long-term savings that the equipment will represent, given that the annual cost of the Festival tent is 7,000 euros to which should be added those of the Fair.
